Frequently asked questions (FAQs)

How much do you charge per square foot for the workshop spaces?

Our charges vary from £10 to £15 per square foot, per year.  This variation occurrs because the cost of the shared areas and equipment is equally distributed across the membership.

What shared equipment do you provide?

We provide commonly used woodworking machinery, such as: a large and a small bandsaw, electric planer thicknesser, woodturning lathes, pillar drill and morticer, and dust extraction.

Do you provide live/work accommodation?

No. Our workshops are purely for light industrial use.  We do not have permission from the local authority to use the premises for residential/living accommodation.

Can members of the public use your machine workshop on an hourly basis?

Sorry - no.  This is not possible, due to operational and insurance reasons.  All our members receive training on the safe handling and care of the shared machines before they are qualified to use them.

Are your members allowed to bring in their own large equipment, rather than sharing Chiselworks'?

Members can install their own woodworking equipment providing:

  • It meets Chiselworks' requirements for electrical safety,
  • its weight does not exceed 30kg per square ft., and
  • the member is adequately insured, e.g. has public liability ensurance
